UK - A psychotic illegal immigrant who used his baby as a tool to avoid being deported has been jailed for life for her murder, and must serve a minimum of 16 years.

Nigerian Olusola  Akinrele, who lived in Cambridgeshire, denied murder and had overstayed his visa.

Akinrele, 34, was sentenced at the Old Bailey for killing seven-week-old baby Leeya, who died, in December 2006, as a result of a gruesome catalogue of injuries.

The Girl, Leeya Akinrele, died after spending 12 days on a  hospital life-support machine. The life support machine was turned off when doctors decided that there was no prospect of recovery.

She had suffered brain damage and other injuries including a fractured skull, fractured thigh and 20 broken ribs and fingers. Her fingers had been broken by being bitten, and had turned septic.

Leeya was born on November 7, 2006, but on December 18 of that year emergency services were called to the Whittlesey home in Lapwing Drive after she apparently appeared lifeless.

The child's mother, Kelly Inman, 22, also of Whittlesey, admitted allowing the baby's death.

She was cleared of murder and causing the baby's death.

She received a total sentence of five years, having also been convicted of a separate fraud charge.
